A&E Hoarders Episode
Sept 2010
I had the unique opportunity in May to work on an episode of the A&E hit series, Hoarders. I was one of 17 volunteers from the DFW Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO). Hoarders is a reality show that illustrates the severe challenges faced by individuals with chronic hoarding (disposophobia). We were fortunate to work with a local woman who bravely welcomed the intrusion of organizers, movers, a clinical therapist, camera crew and extended family into her home. Over the course of a single weekend, we were able to de-clutter, clean and re-organize the garage, outdoor shed, kitchen and part of an upstairs bedroom. Thanks to the support and partnership of 1-800-GOT-JUNK, we filled 10 dump trucks with trash, donations and recycling. We also identified numerous collectible items to be sold on eBay through Dallas-based Easysale.
Although the work was physically demanding (and sometimes dirty), we were grateful for the experience. We witnessed how the efforts of so many committed professionals could bring about positive and dramatic changes in such a short period of time. We created a momentum that would carry this family through the months ahead of additional work. As we prepared to leave Sunday evening, we were rewarded with hugs from the grateful family members.
The episode with “Jo” will be airing this Monday, September 13th at 9:00pm CST on A&E. Please watch!
